    Looking Forward in Northeast Ohio

SMPS NEO Where the Northeastern Ohio Skyline is Headed

On September 17th, 2019 SMPS members gathered at the City Club of Cleveland to learn where the Northeast Ohio skyline is headed. Panelists Michael Deemer, Executive Vice President, Business Development Downtown Cleveland Alliance, Vince Adamus, Vice President, Real Estate & Business Development Greater Cleveland Partnership, Kimberly Beckett, Director of Business Relations Downtown Akron Partnership and moderator, Jack Baumann, Director of Project Development at Donley’s provided an overall look at the economic health and growth of Northeast Ohio.

    Key takeaways included the following:

How can we continue the momentum of growth within our downtown areas?

Capitalize on major events and national sporting events. Continue cranking out activities that piggyback on that excitement. Additionally, face the current challenges with the public and private partnerships, evolve public financing.

How has economic development changed in the past 5 years and how will it change in the next 5-10 years?

Funding, employee hiring, generating state funding, the increased awareness of entrepreneurship, and helping small businesses has all changed dramatically over the past 5 years. Now and into the future, employers are shifting their focus to searching for a business site selection that will best attract the workforce and feature dense, walkable areas with transit and development assets.

What are the most critical changes that we must make to face the future effectively?

We need to listen to the wants and needs of our young professionals and create a better public transit system.

How do we overcome the workforce challenge?

By being more inclusive. We need programs supporting those underrepresented as well as the continuation of programs such as Say Yes to Education Cleveland.

Join us for future events, or become a member of SMPS. SMPS is open to anyone seeking educational exploration and continuing education, networking, cultivating and building relationships, adding value to personal and professional advancement within the A/E/C industry.
